Is the Green Card Lottery the easiest and fastest way to get a permanent US visa?

To live in the U.S. has been a dream of many, for which one should obtain a green card.  A Green Card or Permanent Resident Card acts as proof of a person’s lawful permanent resident status in the United States.  There are many ways of obtaining a green card.  Some of the most common ways include immigration through a family member, immigration through employment, and immigration through investment.  But, the easiest and fastest means of getting a green card is to participate in Diversity Visa Lottery Program.

The USA Green Card Lottery, also known as the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program or the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery Program, is officially organized by the U.S. Government and conducted by the Department of State every year. The U.S. Government provides nearly fifty five thousand green cards every year to natives of countries with a low immigration rate to the U.S.A. This program aims to help the citizens of underrepresented countries to enjoy the benefits of living and working in the U.S. If you receive a visa through the Green Card Lottery Program, you, your spouse, and your unmarried children under the age of 21 will also get a U.S. Permanent Resident Visa.

To get a Permanent Resident Card through Diversity Visa Lottery Program you need to register online. The Department of State uses an electronic registration system to ensure complete security. If you like to participate, you have to submit your Electronic Diversity Visa (E-DV) Entry Forms to the Department of State during the registration period specified for that particular annual DV program. If your green card application is approved, you will be notified. Winners of the Diversity Visa Lottery Program are chosen by a computer-generated random lottery draw.

Laura, the entire process from start to finish can take anywhere between a few months to 2 years. There are various factors. First, if you apply early, you will be better off in the sense that your information can be reviewed, checked, and double checked to make sure everything is in order. However, applying early also can add several months to the wait time. After the lottery application is actually submitted to the program, which usually occurs sometime between October and December of each year, you can expect to receive the “results” of the registration within 3-6 months. The government sends out notices sometime between late March and early June of each year for the previous year’s lottery. At that point, if you are a winner, you will need to complete much a more detailed visa application form and will be called for an interview when your visa case number is up. This can happen in 1-2 months or even up to a year later. If your visa application is accepted and your interview is successful, you have completed the process. So there is no exact answer to your question. In general, you can say that the process (to get results and, if successful, receive your visa) will take between 6-18 months after your registration is submitted to the lottery. You can learn more about the program at this Green Card Lottery FAQ page.
