Green Card Lottery & US Immigration Terminology

The Green Card Lottery and U.S. immigration can be confusing. Many obscure terms are used to describe various aspects of the visa registration and visa application processes. Provided here are some of the most important terms that specifically relate to the U.S. Immigration Lottery (DV Lottery). You should know these terms when participating in the Green Card Lottery.

A "green card" is also known as a permanent residence card. The holder of a green card is allowed to live and work in the United States permanently and legally. The green card is also used as an entry document when returning to the country from abroad. Green card holders can eventually apply for US citizenship if they satisfy special requirements.

Every citizen of a foreign country, wishing to enter the U.S. must obtain a visa (either a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence). A U.S. visa is a permit issued by a U.S. embassy or consulate that gives the visa holder permission to enter the United States.

A nonimmigrant visa is for foreign citizens who wish to enter the United States temporarily for a specific purpose. Examples of persons who can receive nonimmigrant visas are tourists, students, diplomats, and temporary workers.

An immigrant visa is for a people who plan to live permanently in the United States. To receive an immigrant visa a person must satisfy certain requirements (most common in the areas of education, family/relatives, or work).

The official name for the Green Card Lottery is the Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery Program (or Diversity Visa Lottery). The DV Lottery makes 55,000 immigrant visas available through a yearly lottery. When you receive your visa through the Diversity Visa Lottery Program you and your family are authorized to live and work permanently in the United States.

The DV Lottery is the same program as the annual Green Card Lottery. This program grants permanent visas to live and work in the United States to people who satisfy minimum education and/or work requirements. No employer or family sponsorship is required to participate and win the DV Lottery.

USCIS is the acronym for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS is the official U.S. Government department that is responsible for the administration of immigration and naturalization adjudication functions and establishing immigration services policies and priorities.

USA Green Card
USA Green Card is a non-governmental organization dedicated to helping non-American natives immigrate to the United States of America. The organization was established in 1997 and in 2001 USA Green Card launched its secure electronic Green Card Lottery application system to guarantee error-free entries and easy online tracking of application status.

The Diversity Lottery program is an annual lottery run by the U.S. Department of State. The DV Lottery offers up to 55,000 permanent resident visas each year to randomly selected applicants from eligible countries. The Visa Lottery is run once a year, usually in October, and qualified applicants are randomly chosen by computer. The program is administered directly from the U.S. Department of State Kentucky Consular Center (KCC) in Williamsburg, Kentucky. The Kentucky center was established in the year 2000 by the U.S. Department of State to take over administration of the Diversity Visa Lottery program from the National Visa Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. KCC has continued the excellent tradition of quality service to all applicants of the DV Lottery program.

The United States Department of State is the official overseer of the annual Diversity Visa Lottery program. This department has ultimate authority to grant U.S. visas to the winners of the Green Card Lottery program.

A green card application is a formal request for a United States Visa or "green card."

An applicant is the foreign citizen making a formal request for a visa (nonimmigrant or immigrant) or a green card.

Are you ready to live and work in the United States? Now is the time to register in this year's Green Card Lottery program! Winners of the DV Lottery receive permanent residence visas for the United States.
