Common Questions About the Passport Requirement

  1. My passport number is longer than 9 characters/numbers and I cannot enter all the characers/numbers in the required field. What should I enter as the passport number?

Enter the first 9 characters/numbers of your passport number.

  2. My passport's expiration date is beyond 10 years from today and I cannot select the correct expiration year in the required field. What should I enter for the passport expiration date?

Enter the day and month of expiration the same as it is listed in your passport and enter the latest year available in the year of expiration field.

  3. For Venezuela passport holders: My passport has expired. The US recognizes an additional 5 years of validity for Venezuelan passports. What should I enter for the passport expiration date?

Add 5 years to the year listed on your passport as the expiration date. If you have received an extension or “prórogga” add 7 years to the year listed in your passport as the expiration date.

Note: Effective June 7, 2019, Venezuelan passport validity was extended an additional 5 years past the passport's date of expiration. Venezuelan passport holders who have received an extension or "próroga" will have the validity period extended by 5 years from the end date of the extension.

  4. Can I use my refugee travel document to satisfy the passport requirement?

If you are applying for the DV Lottery and do not have a valid passport, but you do have a refugee travel document, enter your refugee travel document number in place of the passport number, along with the issuing entity and expiration date.

  5. How do I know if I qualify for a passport exemption as a stateless person?

DV Lottery entrants who select this exemption will be asked to explain why they selected this exemption and do not have a valid passport.

  6. How do I know if I qualify for a passport exemption as a national of a communist-controlled country unable to obtain a passport from the government of that country?

DV Lottery entrants who select this exemption will be asked to explain why he/she is unable to obtain a passport.

  7. I am unable to obtain a passport. Can I claim an exemption on this basis? If not, how can I apply for an individual waiver of the passport requirement/exemption?

DV Lottery entrants who select this exemption will be asked to explain why they selected this exemption and do not have a valid passport.

Simply being unable to obtain a passport does not automatically mean you qualify for a waiver of the passport requirement.
