Passport Requirements

More details about the passport requirement.

Update: As of February 4, 2022, applicants to the DV Lottery are no longer required to provide passport details.

There is no passport requirement for applicants.

Between calendar years 2019 and 2021, applicants did need to have a valid and unexpired passport or provide an acceptable reason why they did not have a passport in order to participate in the Green Card Lottery.

Only the primary applicant was required to have a passport. (Spouses and children were not required to have passports.)

On the application form applicants had to provide their full name as it appeared on their passport, the passport's country of issuance, and its expiration date.

Passport exceptions.

During the period when a passport was required, applicants could request an exemption to the requirement if:

  • They were stateless,
  • They were a national of a Communist controlled country and unable to obtain a passport, OR
  • They were the beneficiary of a waiver approved by the United States Government.

Additional information about special passport circumstances considered during the era of the passport requirement are available.
