Can I Apply If I Am In the U.S.?
If I currently live in the U.S., can I apply to the Green Card Lottery?
Yes, if you currently live in the United States, you can apply to the Green Card Lottery, also known as the Diversity Visa Lottery. Your current country of residence or citizenship does not matter. The program considers only your country of birth when determining eligibility. The lottery allows individuals from eligible countries, including those residing in the United States, to participate and potentially obtain a Green Card, granting permanent residency in the USA.
To participate, you must be a native of a country that is eligible for the Diversity Visa Lottery, as determined by the U.S. Department of State. The list of eligible countries can change annually, based on immigration patterns to the United States.
However, even if you were not born in an eligible country, you may still be able to apply under certain circumstances. Exceptions apply if:
- One of your parents was born in an eligible country.
- Your spouse was born in an eligible country.
- One of your spouse's parents was born in an eligible country.
If any of these cases apply to you, you can claim the eligible country of your parent or spouse when applying to the Green Card Lottery.
Furthermore, regardless of your location or residence, if you can claim eligibility through an eligible country, you can submit your application from anywhere in the world. Whether you are in the U.S. or any other country, you can participate in the lottery and submit your entry.
