Do I Need a Passport to Participate?

Passport requirement.

Update: As of February 4, 2022, DV Lottery applicants are no longer required to provide passport details.

You do not need to have a passport to apply to the Green Card Lottery.

Between calendar years 2019 and 2021, applicants did need to have a valid and unexpired passport in order to participate in the Green Card Lottery.

Only the primary applicant was required to have a passport. Spouses and children were not required to have passports.

Some applicants without a passport were still able to participate. Certain exceptions existed and additional information about the previous passport requirements is available.

The previous passport rule was eliminated by a federal court order on February 4, 2022.
