Biden v. Trump: Immigration Showdown

June 13, 2024

Man Holds USA Flag Against Blue Sky

As the 2024 presidential campaign heats up, the immigration policies of Joe Biden and Donald Trump are drawing significant attention, especially from those aspiring to immigrate to the United States. Both candidates offer starkly different visions for managing illegal immigration, reflecting their broader political philosophies.

President Joe Biden aims to create a more humane and orderly immigration system. Since taking office, Biden has focused on both enforcement and providing lawful pathways for immigration. His administration has deployed more border agents and officers than ever before, using advanced technology to detect and prevent illegal crossings. Biden's policies also include significant changes to the asylum process. Migrants who cross the Southern border unlawfully are barred from receiving asylum unless they have made an appointment through the CBP One app or applied for and been denied asylum in another country first. Additionally, Biden has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans and others from countries with unsafe conditions, allowing them to stay and work in the U.S. temporarily.

Biden's administration has also intensified efforts against human smuggling, increasing arrests and prosecutions of smugglers and those who profit from illegal immigration. These measures reflect a balanced approach, combining enforcement with measures to make legal immigration easier and more humane.

In contrast, former President Donald Trump advocates for strict immigration enforcement and aims to limit both illegal and legal immigration to protect American jobs and security. Trump plans to continue building the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a key feature of his first term, to prevent illegal crossings. His "Remain in Mexico" policy requires asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while their claims are processed in the U.S., a move intended to reduce the number of asylum seekers allowed into the country temporarily. Trump also proposes ending birthright citizenship, which grants automatic citizenship to anyone born in the U.S., and plans to increase the deportation of undocumented immigrants, expanding the use of detention facilities to hold migrants until they can be deported.

For aspiring immigrants, Biden’s policies may offer more pathways to enter and stay in the U.S. legally, especially for those from countries experiencing unsafe conditions. His administration's emphasis on security, combined with humanitarian efforts, seeks to create a more orderly and humane immigration system. On the other hand, Trump's policies focus on making it more difficult to enter the U.S. illegally and reducing the number of immigrants allowed into the country overall, prioritizing strict enforcement and immigration reduction.

Both candidates promise different approaches to handle illegal immigration, with Biden leaning towards a mix of security and humanitarian efforts, while Trump focuses on strict enforcement and reducing immigration levels. This stark contrast offers voters two distinct choices on how the U.S. should address one of its most contentious issues.
