Do you know that immigrants played a critical role in the birth of the United States?

Independence Day is celebrated in the United States on July 4 each year. It commemorates the publication of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776.

On July 4, 2021, the United States celebrates its 245th birthday!

The country’s Founding Fathers—the men who united the Thirteen American Colonies, led the war of independence from Britain, and wrote the U.S. Constitution that structured the country’s democratic government—were immigrants or descendants of immigrants from countries like England, Ireland, Scotland, and the West Indies. One of the most famous of these men, Alexander Hamilton, for example, was born on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies.

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was published. Of the 56 men who signed the document, 8 were born in foreign lands. Button Gwinnett and Robert Morris were born in England. George Taylor and Matthew Thornton were born in Ireland. James Wilson and John Witherspoon were born in Scotland. James Smith was born in Northern Ireland and Francis Lewis was born in Wales.

Thousands of immigrant soldiers from many countries fought in the American Revolutionary War against the British Crown from1775 until 1783. Two of these immigrants were top generals who helped the American colonies fight the American Revolution: Marquis de Lafayette of France and Casimir Pulaski of Poland.

Immigrants made significant contributions to the founding of the new United States and even sacrificed their lives for the enlightened pursuit of a government of and for the people, based upon classical liberalism and republican principles.

If it were not for the thousands of brave men and women who originally colonized America—our country’s original immigrants—there would not be anything for which to fight.

Many of these original colonialists—among them Founding Fathers, soldiers, generals, and signers of the Constitution—were immigrants. Brave immigrants helped give life to America and immigrants continue to this day to make important contributions to make our country the greatest nation in the world!
