The foreign-born population of the United States soared in 2021 to an all-time high of 46.2 million people. The country also welcomed 1.5 million new immigrants in 2021, according to a report published by the Center for Immigration Studies on December 20, 2021.
This record-setting immigration achievement occurred after an overall drop in the American immigrant population through the middle of 2020, “and then rose dramatically after [President] Biden’s victory.”
As a percentage of the population, U.S. immigrants now represent 14.2% of the total, which is the highest it has been in 111 years.
The increase in numbers of immigrants coming to America is at least partially attributed to the Biden Administration’s more welcoming and open policies and public statements as compared to the previous one.
Additional factors of the swelling immigrant population include the resumption of visa processing at American consulates and embassies worldwide after widespread shutdowns during the initial onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the recovery of the U.S. economy, which is booming and in high demand for workers to fill millions of unfilled jobs.
