With the signing into law this week of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan and continuing vaccination efforts, the U.S. economy can look ahead to grow by as much as 6.5% in 2021 according to the latest OECD estimates.
A priority of the American Rescue Plan is to expand vaccination efforts against the coronavirus. More widespread vaccination opportunities will help get people back to work, decrease unemployment, and strengthen the economy.
But President Biden plans to do more. He promises to pursue a historic, jobs creating infrastructure plan. This $2 trillion proposal would create millions more jobs to modernize the nation’s aging transportation system and make it more climate friendly.
With more and more people getting vaccinated and returning to work, and with potentially millions of new jobs coming online to tackle U.S. infrastructure projects, there is a strong conviction that the United States economy will return to pre-pandemic strength by late 2021 or early 2022.
As more jobs are created in the American economy in 2021, demand for qualified workers will increase. Immigrants with strong technical expertise or advanced degrees will be especially attractive to U.S. based employers who already cannot find sufficient talent within the country. President Biden believes in opening the doors to more immigrant workers and he has supported the idea of expanding the Diversity Visa Lottery program as one way of accomplishing this.
