What is the impact of COVID-19 vaccines on the United States economy and immigration policy? Recently published reports suggest that as vaccinations accelerate, prospects for the U.S. economy and immigration will improve significantly.
In early February 2021, The Conference Board forecast that U.S. real GDP will grow by 4.4% year-over-year in 2021. The organization’s report cites a decline in COVID-19 infection rates and expanding vaccination programs as two primary drivers behind the bullish outlook.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), also in February 2021, projected that U.S. GDP will “return to its prepandemic level in mid-2021” with employment levels returning to normal as soon as 2024. With vaccines on the rise and fewer cases of coronavirus being reported, the CBO concludes that a reduction in the need for social distancing will be a key force pushing up employment levels.
What do these positive forecasts mean for the U.S.? If COVID-19 is, in fact, tamed and controlled, then restrictions on work and travel can be lifted. This has enormous implications for boosting growth across all business sectors and the overall economy; it will also help U.S. immigration processes return to normal.
Joe Biden has already taken a head start with executive order actions reversing many of the previous administration’s draconian immigration bans and restrictions that were put in place with the excuse of being precautions against COVID-19. Biden has repealed the Trump ban on Muslim countries and stopped the scrapping of the H1-B visa lottery, for example, which were enacted, supposedly, to prevent the coronavirus from entering the U.S. and preserving jobs for Americans during the economic slump, respectively.
Change is also coming on the immigration front, with the restart of visa processing services at U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide after they were essentially stopped altogether by Biden’s predecessor (again, under the pretext of avoiding the spread of coronavirus).
What else should we expect because of all this change? With the American economic recovery expected to gain momentum in 2021, international travel will expand, border crossings will reopen, and work visa issuances will increase. As part of a larger U.S. immigration overhaul being attempted by Biden, even the Diversity Visa Lottery program is expected to not only be preserved but expanded in terms of number of diversity visas available each year. (The DV Lottery had been persistently maligned by the previous president, who sought to eliminate it completely.)
What does all this good news mean to you, as a prospective U.S. immigrant? It means that now is an excellent time for you to seek your U.S. permanent residence visa (“green card”). An improving economy, more jobs, and expanding immigration opportunities beckon you.
