Reintroducing the "Security and Fairness Enhancement for America Act of 2025," Representative Mike Collins (GA) has brought U.S. immigration policy back into the spotlight in Washington D.C. At the heart of this act lies the intention to dismantle the Diversity Visa (DV) Program, a system that currently provides opportunities for individuals from underrepresented countries to gain legal entry into the United States.

Furthermore, the act seeks to place limitations on what is commonly referred to as "chain migration," specifically restricting the ability of DV Lottery winners to immediately sponsor family members for preferential green cards.

Should this act successfully navigate the complex legislative process and become law, the implications would be substantial. The elimination of the DV Program would undoubtedly alter the demographic landscape of incoming immigrants, removing a pathway that has historically fostered diversity. Additionally, the proposed restrictions on family-based immigration could impact the ability of families to reunify within the United States.

Despite the traditionally challenging path for any proposed legislation--involving committee reviews, votes in both chambers of Congress, and the possibility of executive veto--the "Security and Fairness Enhancement for America Act of 2025" enters a significantly altered political landscape. The current makeup of Republican representatives, coupled with heightened anti-immigration sentiment emanating from key political figures, suggests that this act faces a potentially less arduous journey than similar bills in the past.

While the future of the DV Program remains uncertain, it is important to remember that the program is currently still active. Therefore, individuals who are interested in applying for the Diversity Visa Program are strongly encouraged to do so without delay, adhering to all official guidelines and deadlines set by the U.S. Department of State. The program remains a viable option at this time.
