The Green Card Lottery, also known as the Diversity Visa Lottery, is a program run by the U.S. Government that provides a limited number of visas (about 50,000) each year to individuals from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. These “diversity visas” allow you to enter the country and obtain a “green card,” which is equivalent to legal permanent residence.
So, how can you apply? To participate in the Green Card Lottery, follow five steps.
To be eligible, you must be a native of a country that is eligible for the lottery, be married to a native of an eligible country, or have a parent who was born in an eligible country. You can find a list of eligible countries here. There are also minimal education and/or work experience requirements, and you can learn more about these requirements here.
The application for the Green Card Lottery can be completed at any time of the year through USA Green Card. Be careful to review your application for errors, as incomplete or inaccurate applications will be disqualified. Your application will be reviewed and if all details are in accordance with the program requirements, you will receive a confirmation notice. If anything is wrong, you will receive an email with instructions on how to fix or complete your application. You will have access to your application form on the USA Green Card website and can edit any details necessary until your application is completed.
Once you have completed the application form, USA Green Card will submit it online to the U.S. Government during the annual entry period, usually in the fall. When this happens, you will receive a submission notification by email with a confirmation number.
Within approximately six months, the U.S. State Department will randomly select winners from among the pool of eligible applicants but will not notify participants of their results. You can check your results on the U.S. State Department website using your confirmation number, but USA Green Card will also notify you of your results as soon as they become available. If you are selected, you will receive a winner’s notification, and you will need to follow the instructions provided in it to proceed with the diversity visa issuance process to obtain your green card.
If you are selected in the Green Card Lottery, you will need to go through the standard process for obtaining a green card, which includes undergoing a medical examination and an interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate. (If you are living in the U.S., you will normally be allowed to adjust your status from within the country instead of having to complete the process in your country of origin.) After you have completed these steps, you will be able to enter (or remain in) the United States and live and work legally in the country as a legal permanent resident.
